Tales from the Land of Gullah

May 17- September 14

You may have heard the story of the “Tortoise and the Hare” or even sang “Kumbayah,” but do you know where these classics came from? Families can experience the unique cultural rhythms of the South Carolina and Georgia Sea Islands in our new special exhibition exploring the rich heritage of the Gullah people, which blends their West African heritage with European-American and slave traditions.

Tales from the Land of Gullah buildes bridges into the ancestral home that exists in the hearts and minds of many Gullah people today. Taking us back to the 1940s, long before the existing bridges were built to connect the islands to the mainland and the culture began to blend. In today’s society, values and traditions are assimilating into one as advances in technology bring the world together. This exhibition aims to preserve and provide cultural understanding of Gullah traditions, as well as develop an appreciation for one’s own culture and background.

Learn and Grow

Children explore their own traditions through the traditions of others in Tales from the Land of Gullah. Learn about the preservation of cultural histories and learning rhythm and patters of Gullah life. We hope children and parents are inspired to investigate and learn their own culture and how it influences their daily lives.
